Independence Acres Interview

IA-logo-wood

David, congratulations on being the winner of The Power of 3D Audio Contest!

When the RS3D team demos Independence Acres, everyone loves it. There is something compelling about the arcade-like gameplay and the quirky premise that keeps people entertained. It’s so much fun that our demo lines are getting backed up! I would like to ask you a few questions about Independence Acres and your experience using RS3D, but let’s start things off by giving you a chance to tell us a little bit about yourself.

RS3D Updates to Unity 5.2!

We are pleased to announce RealSpace 3D Audio Unity Plugin v0.11.0!

With v0.11.0, RS3D has been incorporated into the new Unity 5.2 Spatializer Native Audio Plugin architecture.

This new approach by Unity allows RealSpace 3D to do its processing down to the metal which means performance increases in speed and lower memory use.

Also new to RS3D is the ability to incorporate a personalized HRTF (please contact VisiSonics if you are interested in a personalized HRTF), the ability to update an expired RS3D license in a build for end-users, and improvements to room reflections. For a full list of features and enhancements, please refer to the readme included with the download package.

Ready today is RS3D Audio Plugin for Unity Windows/MacOSX/Android. Please note that this release only works with Unity 5.2 and above. We will still maintain our 5.1 plugin for a short period of time but it will be deprecated in the near future.

RS3D Now Integrates with the Unity Audio Mixer!

We are pleased to announce RealSpace 3D Audio Unity Plugin v0.10.7.

With v0.10.7, RS3D now supports integration with the Unity AudioMixer via the RealSpace 3D AudioSource. AudioSource also features an API for loading Unity AudioMixerGroup via scripting.
Other new RS3D features include support for the Samsung Gear VR. Bug fixes include a, now, fully functional “Doppler Effect” setting in the RS3D plugin GUI. For a full list of features and enhancements, please refer to the readme included with the download package.
Ready today are plugins for Unity Windows/MacOSX/Android, and for iOS. Please note that we have discontinued all support for our Unity 4 plugin so that we may focus our efforts on making the best possible Unity 5 experience.

Significant Update to RealSpace 3D Audio Unity Plugin!

We are pleased to announce the release RealSpace 3D Audio v0.10.2.

Listening to our user feedback, we have completely reorganized the workflow of RS3D. The “Environment Setter” has been removed and all room settings are done via the RS3D_VirtualRoom.

RealSpace VirtualRooms only have to be created once and your 3D audio sources will take on the acoustic charactristics of the VirtualRoom as you pass between them. VirtualRooms can be placed into scenes via the Unity GameObject menu, dragging the prefab into the scene, or instantiation via scripting.

VirtualRooms now exposes the true reflection coefficients of materials. You can choose from actual physical materials for the virtual room walls, ceiling, and floor. Materials such as, “Brick,” “Plaster,” “Concrete,” “Marble,” and many, many more.

Additionally, VirtualRooms allows for room presets. You can build room wall, ceiling, and floor material reflection coefficients and use the preset in other rooms. You can even create custom room coefficients and all coefficients can be changed on the fly.

See the release notes for a complete list of improvements to the new RealSpace 3D Audio!

Eden River Creator Aaron Lemke Talks About His VR Experience and RealSpace 3D Audio

EdenRiverBanner

RealSpace: The VR industry is a new one, and is attracting creative individuals from many different industries. Please tell us a little bit about your background, and where you are coming from?

Aaron: I grew up playing in bands in Austin, Texas, drums, guitar and keyboards mostly. I was always interested in games but never thought I would be able to make them. I studied Psychology at UT Austin with hopes of becoming a neuroscientist. The rise of independent games and the availability of great tools like Unity inspired me to try my hand at game design. I threw myself fully into designing traditional monitor games, taught myself to code… Then the Rift came out and I abandoned the other monitor games I was working on and started making VR experiences.

RealSpace: There is a great photo of you on the Unello Design website, surrounded by art, literature and musical instruments. It seems as though you are an exceptionally creative person, and have a well-rounded approach to your process. Is there something or someone that you see as an important influence on your work or on your process?

Aaron: I’m influenced by many different artists and thinkers who take a multidisciplinary approach to their work. People like Jaron Lanier, Ben Franklin, Elon Musk, John Lasseter, and Walt Disney to name a few. For better or for worse, my own curiosity has driven me to this way of thinking. I like to know how things work, so in game design that means learning every single part of the process.

One of the upsides of knowing how to make music along with knowing how to code or make 3d models or do sound design is that if you are ever stumped by an especially hard bit of code or a melody that’s not quite right, you can always switch to one of the other tasks. More often than not, just taking a step back and thinking about something else for a while helps the solution become clear.

“I’ve always thought VR should be a tool for transcendence.” -Aaron Lemke
